Topic: Quality Systems at the South Pole
By: Mike Zernick, Quality and Safety Director, IceCube Project
Mike will be presenting a look at some of the “Quality and Safety Systems” utilized by the IceCube Project of the University of Wisconsin, Madison. The IceCube Project is a construction project, installing a neutrino-detecting telescope in the ice at the South Pole. The environment can only be described as hostile, -50 C and 10,000 feet above sea-level. These conditions only make focusing on Quality and Safety much more important and much more difficult---if not impossible at times. In fact, an appropriate name for our effort might be, “Quality on a Snowshoe-String.” The key areas upon which presentation will focus are: Management Review, Non-Conforming Material, Problem-Solving, Training, Document Control, and Audits.
